ABOUT US
Our Mission
Our goal is to use the privileges of academically successful teens to provide opportunities to students who are systematically deprived of academic support and resources.
The Problem
The Process
In 2022, the National Center for Education Statistics conducted their first comprehensive post-COVID exam. The reading scores for 9-year-olds in the United States dropped 5 points, the largest average reading score decline since 1990. The lowest-performing students faced the brunt of this drop, with the bottom 10th percentile of readers dropping 10 points while the top 10th percentile only dropped 2 points. Only 32% of students performed at a proficient level, and the population was disproportionately white and high income.
Students who were eligible for free lunch had an average score 28 points lower than that of students who were ineligible for free lunch. Pre-COVID, low-income students already faced the systemic disadvantages of understaffed schools with limited funding and academic resources. The additional obstacles low-income students and students-of-color faced during remote learning, including less unreliable high-speed internet and access to digital resources, only broadened the gap.
The research consistently shows the most effective time for intervention is early intervention. So, we train top-performing high school students on phonics instruction and assessment administration using data-driven methodologies to increase literacy and close reading gaps in the highest-need K-5 students.
We also raise money for educational materials for low-income schools, funding for foster care educational enrichment programs, and tuition for formal, data-driven, reading instruction courses for teachers at low-income schools.
We are prioritizing the creation of new Chapters in lowest performing states in the nation, according to the NCES tests and the NAEP, including District of Columbia, Mississippi, New Mexico, Louisiana, West Virginia, Alabama, Arizona, and Hawaii.
